1. Why Providers Will Increase the Use of Connected Health Devices

Along with what the headline indicates about the relation between providers and connected health devices, this article is intriguing because it explains the importance of understanding the current connection—and potential changes to—the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ACA or “Obamacare.”

 

Politics aside, the ACA is important because it “has forced changes in how medical payments are structured, and moved the industry further away from a fee-for-service model.” Basically, wireless medical devices, mHealth and other connected health devices enable for healthcare providers “to care for more patients without compromising quality of care” and “to free up physicians to treat and spend more time with those patients who are in the greatest need of their particular expertise.”

 

2. Live from HealthPack: Human Factors and Packaging Usability

Medical device human factors is a topic that we’ve covered in this blog, but most often in the scope of medical device design. This article makes a sound argument for why human factors “should also be studied in healthcare packaging.”

 

Packaging for a new medical device can sometimes seem trivial or easy to design—especially in relation to the complexity of that device. However, it can also be an unnecessary obstacle for getting clearances or being able to provide the best shipping and warehousing options for distributors and customers. Human factors further this notion in the context of how well a new medical device’s packaging can impact its adoption and success in the market.

 

3. Top Five Digital Transformation Trends In Health Care

Lists such as these are common, but this one is significant because it comes from Forbes, which qualifies and underscores much of what we’ve been keenly aware of the past few years: “Telemedicine,” “mobility and Cloud access,” and “wearables and IoT” (three of the list’s top five trends) are revolutionizing patient care.

 

4. Dept. of Defense Awards Clemson $1.2 Million Grant for Mobile Diabetes Management

This is exciting news because it is yet another indication of the high expectations and potential for mobile medical devices. It’s also noteworthy because military-based R&D in new technologies have historically led to tremendous opportunities and growth for the private sector.

1. Gartner Identifies the Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018

Each of the 10 IoT technologies merit their inclusion on the list, however, there were some recognizable patterns to what made the list. Arguably, those 10 IoT technologies could be put into four categories (with plenty of cross-category fluidity for several of them), which is interesting it illustrates how IoT is a system of discrete technologies.

If you further consider the list/categories in terms of medical IoT and mHealth devices, it’s not difficult to appreciate how their design and development will rely upon companies that have proven experience in each—especially with platforms like our Apollo™ wireless medical device platform. 2. IoT Sensors Critical to Successful Health IT Infrastructure

This is noteworthy because if the previous “Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies” article had been written with a more narrow focus on medical and healthcare IoT, it would have likely included IoT sensors on the list, and for good reason! After all, as this article points out, the healthcare IoT market is projected to growth 26 percent by 2022, much of which will be driven by technologies that use IoT sensors.

 

3. Which Low Power IoT Network protocol will prevail? Bluetooth, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, or SigFox

Similarly, this is noteworthy because the “Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies” did address low-power IoT networking—twice! What also makes this is interesting is the “comments” section creates almost as many answers and it does questions.

IoT, Human Factors and Value-Based Care: Our Recommended Topics at MDM 2017

Orange County medical device design and development company DeviceLab shares its recommendations for panels and presentations at MDM 2017.

Earlier this week, we published a news release that announced our participation at the upcoming 32nd Annual MD&M West Conference as an exhibitor.

 

Of course, we are excited to attend what is billed as “the world’s largest collection of medical device manufacturers and suppliers” and to demonstrate our  Apollo™ wireless medical device electronic systems platform via our breathtaking “hospital bed of the future” display.

 

However, these conferences are not just about showcasing medical device design and development companies, but instead to provide opportunities for the medtech community to educate and engage in panels and presentations.

 

As much as possible, we try to find time away from our booth to attend these panels and talks. If you are attending MDM 2017—and especially if you follow this blog—the following are the topics for which we are most interested and think you will be too!
